04Places API
The Google Places API — what it returns, how to use it, and a simpler alternative
The Google Places API turns a search query or a place ID into structured business data — name, address, coordinates, phone, website, rating. This page explains what it does, how to get a key, what it actually costs, and where a one-call alternative saves you the SKU stacking and the credit-card gate.

A stable key for any establishment on Maps
What the Places API actually does
It is an HTTP service under Google Maps Platform. You send a query — a search string, a nearby point, or a place ID — and it returns formatted records about establishments and points of interest. Three request types cover almost every use:
- Text Search / Nearby Search — hand it "dentist in Austin" or a latitude/longitude, get back a list of matching businesses with basic fields.
- Place Details — hand it one place ID, get the full record for that one place: phone, website, opening hours, rating.
- Place ID — a stable identifier for a business, so the same place resolves the same way across calls and across Google Maps.
The catch that surprises most people: search and details are billed as separate SKUs. Finding a business gives you the ID and a few fields; the phone number and website come from a second, more expensive call.
How to get a Google Places API key
- Create a project in the Google Cloud Console.
- Enable the Places API (New) for that project.
- Attach a billing account with a credit card — required before any call returns data, even inside the free caps.
- Generate an API key under Credentials and send it on every request.
The $200 monthly credit that once covered small projects ended on 28 February 2025. Usage is now governed by per-SKU free caps — roughly 10,000 Essentials and 5,000 Pro calls a month — after which every call is billed.
What it costs — the short version
On Google's official grid (first volume tier, USD per 1,000): Text Search $32, Place Details $17. Because a finished record needs both, one enriched business costs roughly $49 per 1,000. The full field-by-field breakdown, and why the SKUs stack, is on the pricing page.
A simpler way to get the same data
RankFabrik's Places API returns the same core record — name, address, coordinates, phone, website, rating — from one call, no second SKU for the contact fields. And it prints the one number Google never does: the share of records where each field was actually filled. Here is a real sweep, measured before you'd pay a cent:
Missing fields come back as null, never invented, and the
completeness block scores the whole batch — so an empty field is a fact you
read up front, not a surprise you discover after billing.

Questions
What is the Google Places API?
The Google Places API is an HTTP service from Google Maps Platform that returns data about businesses and points of interest — name, address, coordinates, opening hours, phone, website and rating — from search queries, a nearby point, or a specific place ID. It is the programmatic way to pull the business data you see on Google Maps into your own application.
How do I get a Google Places API key?
You create a project in the Google Cloud Console, enable the Places API for it, and generate an API key under Credentials. A billing account with a credit card must be attached to the project before any call returns data, even within the free caps. The key is then passed on every request.
What is the difference between the Google Places API and the Google Maps API?
"Google Maps API" is the umbrella brand — Google Maps Platform — covering Maps (rendering a map), Routes (directions), and Places (business and location data). The Places API is the Places half: it returns structured records about establishments, not a rendered map. If you want business data rather than a map on screen, Places is the part you call.
Can I get the same business data without the Google Places API?
Yes. RankFabrik's Places API returns the same core fields — name, address, coordinates, phone, website, rating — from one call per record, with a completeness block that reports how much of each field was actually filled before you commit volume. It needs no Google Cloud project: it runs on Apify and bills per place returned ($1.00–$2.00 per 1,000), never for an empty run. See the field-by-field cost comparison on the pricing page.
Is the Google Places API free to use?
There is no flat free allowance. The $200 monthly credit ended on 28 February 2025 and was replaced by per-SKU free caps — roughly 10,000 Essentials and 5,000 Pro calls per month — after which every call is billed. A credit card is required even to reach those caps.
