Google Places API pricing in 2026 — the real per-1,000 cost, and a flatter alternative
Google's Places API is billed per SKU, and the SKUs stack. A search finds the business; a second call fetches its phone and website. Below are Google's own published numbers, what one complete record actually costs, and the one figure no provider prints — how much of each field is really there.

RankFabrik on Apify — one call, the full record
Side by side, per 1,000 enriched business records
| Google Places API | RankFabrik Places | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to find + enrich 1,000 records | ≈ $49 (Text Search $32 + Place Details $17) | $1.00 map · $2.00 with email |
| Billing model | Pay-as-you-go, one SKU per feature | Pay-per-event on Apify — only records returned are billed |
| Empty results | A billed call can still come back thin | Never billed — an empty run costs nothing |
| How you start | Google Cloud project + card before the first call | An Apify account; run the actor, pay as you go |
| Fill rate shown before you pay | No | Yes — completeness on every response |
| Store & re-use results | Restricted by terms | Yours to keep |
Google's SKUs are billed separately, so a real workflow rarely costs a single SKU. Text Search returns place IDs and basic fields; phone numbers and websites come from a second Place Details call. That is why the honest figure for a finished record is the two SKUs added together.
What Google actually charges
Straight from Google's pricing list — the first volume tier, 0 to 100,000 events a month, in USD per 1,000. Above those volumes the unit price steps down; below the per-SKU free cap it is waived.
| SKU | Per 1,000 | What it returns |
|---|---|---|
| Text Search (Pro) | $32.00 | Find businesses by query + city |
| Nearby Search (Pro) | $32.00 | Find businesses around a point |
| Place Details (Pro) | $17.00 | Phone, website, hours — one place at a time |
| Place Details (Essentials) | $5.00 | IDs, address, location only |
| Contact Data (Enterprise) | $3.00 | Legacy add-on for phone numbers |
| Atmosphere Data (Enterprise) | $5.00 | Legacy add-on for ratings & reviews |

The figure no one prints: fill rate
Every provider will sell you rows. None will tell you, before you pay, how many of those rows carry a phone number or a website. RankFabrik measures it and puts it in the response. Here is a real sweep of bakeries in Lyon — the percentage of records where each field was actually filled:
Zero on reviews is not a bug — it is the answer. On this query the source carries no
review data, and you learn that from the completeness block instead of
from a support ticket three weeks later.
What a response looks like
One call, the whole record. Missing fields come back as null — never
silently dropped — and the completeness block scores the batch.

place-contact — record + email read from the site
Pay per place returned — you are charged only for events the actor actually returns, never for an empty run. Metered and billed by Apify; no separate RankFabrik account to open.
Questions
How much does the Google Places API cost per 1,000 requests?
On Google's official pricing grid (0–100,000 monthly events tier), Text Search and Nearby Search cost $32.00 per 1,000, and Place Details costs $17.00 per 1,000. To turn a search result into a full record with phone and website you call both, so a single enriched business record effectively costs the Text Search SKU plus the Place Details SKU — around $49 per 1,000. Billing must be enabled with a credit card before any call succeeds.
Is the Google Places API free?
Not as a flat allowance anymore. The $200 monthly credit that used to cover most usage ended on 28 February 2025. It was replaced by per-SKU free caps — roughly 10,000 Essentials and 5,000 Pro calls per month — after which every call is billed. A credit card on a Google Cloud billing account is required even to reach the free caps.
What is the cheapest Google Places API alternative?
RankFabrik's Places API runs on Apify and bills per event returned — address, phone, website and rating in a single call. The map record (place) is $1.00 per 1,000; the enriched record with the contact email (place-contact) is $2.00 per 1,000. It is pay-per-event, so an empty run is never billed, and there is no Google Cloud project to set up.
Why can't I tell how complete Google's data is before I pay?
Google's response returns the fields it has and silently omits the rest — you only learn a field was missing after you've been billed for the call. RankFabrik returns a completeness block on every response: the exact percentage of records where each field was actually filled, so you can judge coverage on a small run before committing volume.
Can I store the results?
Google's terms restrict caching and long-term storage of most Places content. RankFabrik returns plain JSON that is yours to keep, export and re-use — there is no storage clause to work around.
Can I get a contact email for each place?
The map feed itself carries no email, and we never invent one. With emails=true the service opens the website it already returned for each place and reads the contact address from it — on real French samples about two in three places that have a website publish one. It is off by default because the extra site visits cost requests; a batch without the flag is not billed for them. Review counts, on the other hand, are genuinely absent from this feed and always come back zero — we say so on the product page rather than let you find out three weeks in.
