YouTube video transcript — turn it on, then take it with you
Every public YouTube video with captions carries a transcript panel built into the player. It's the fastest way to read along — and the wrong tool the moment you want to copy, quote, or check who actually wrote the words.
Turning on the transcript in the YouTube player
- Open the video you want to read.
- Click the three dots directly below the video, next to Share and Save.
- Select "Show transcript." A panel opens alongside the player, timestamped and scrollable, and clicking a line jumps the video to that moment.
If the option isn't in that menu, the video simply has no captions — the uploader turned them off, or YouTube hasn't finished processing them yet.
Where the built-in panel stops being enough
| YouTube's panel | Free generator | |
|---|---|---|
| Download button | No — select and copy by hand | Copy-ready text, one click |
| Auto vs human flag | Not shown anywhere | Yes, on every result |
| Works outside the video page | No — tied to the player | Yes — one link, one page |
The panel is YouTube's own reading tool, not an export tool. It was never built to answer "was this auto-captioned" — which matters the moment you plan to quote the video.
Getting a copy you can actually use
Paste the same video's link into the free generator at https://rankfabrik.com/youtube-transcript and it reads
the same caption track — but hands back plain text, flagged as auto or
human-written, ready to paste anywhere. No account, no extension.
Reading transcripts across many videos, not just one
Checking one video by hand doesn't scale to a channel or a competitor's back-catalogue. The Captions API takes up to 50 video IDs in a single call, and bills only for transcripts it actually returns — nothing for a video with no captions to give.
transcript-auto — auto captions
transcript-human — human captions
Pay per transcript returned — you are charged only for events the actor actually returns, never for an empty run. Metered and billed by Apify; no separate RankFabrik account to open.
Questions
How do I turn on the transcript of a YouTube video?
Open the video, click the three dots below the player next to Share and Save, and choose "Show transcript." It opens in a side panel you can scroll or click through by timestamp. Not every video has one — the option is missing entirely when the uploader disabled captions and YouTube never generated any.
Can I copy or download the transcript straight from that panel?
You can select the text and copy it, but there is no download button, no SRT or VTT export, and nothing telling you whether the captions are human-written or auto-generated. For a portable copy with that flag included, paste the same video's link into the free generator instead.
Does the transcript panel work the same on mobile?
The option is there in the YouTube app too, usually under the description or the same three-dot menu, but the layout shifts between app versions. The free web generator works the same on any device — paste the link, get the text — without hunting for the button.
